Volvo DPF MAINTENANCE

The following lists the maintenance items required to properly perform the DPF Maintenance for most Volvo DPF/SCR Systems. For pre-2010 engines, disregard the SCR/DEF items below.

DPF

EXHAUST AFTERTREATMENT
      DPF & SCR MAINTENANCE

Service the following:

  • SOOT & ASH CLEAN THE DPF CORE

  • SOOT CLEAN THE DOC CORE

  • CORE RETENTION

    • Ensure no loss in "DPF CORE RETENTION" and "DOC CORE RETENTION".

  • DPF DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE SENSOR TUBING

    • Clear the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor TUBING of any soot blockage.

  • DEF CRYSTALLIZATION

    • Inspect the SCR Catalyst and Mixer, remove and clean as needed.

  • EXHAUST LEAKS

    • Inspect the entire Exhaust System, repair any exhaust leaks found.

  • DEF NOZZLE CLEANING

    • Remove the DEF Nozzle, clean all DEF Crystallization using distilled water. If DEF Nozzle is suspected to be in poor condition run the DEF NOZZLE FLOW TEST via PTT, to confirm correct volume of DEF Fluid passing through DEF Nozzle.

  • HEAT DAMAGE to WIRING - INSPECTION

    • Inspect all DPF Wiring and Tubing at the DPF (i.e. DPF Main Wiring Harness, Exhaust Temperature Sensors, BP Tubing, Etc) to ensure no heat damage present.

  • OIL ENTRY INTO ENGINE INTAKE & CAC - INSPECTION

    • Inspect the Engine Intake for signs of Oil entry, clean and repair as needed. The DPF System will run poorly. Generally an old clogged CCV Filter will cause oil entry, but also may be due to failed Turbocharger and other issues.

  • FAULTS (ENGINE & DPF) - INSPECTION

    • Inspect all Faults present, make repairs as needed to ensure no elevated levels of engine soot production.

  • DPF FUEL DOSING MODULE - TEST

    • Using PTT test the DPF Fuel Dosing Module to confirm working properly, can also confirm working properly during DPF REGEN (2010+ only).

  • CLEAR ALL FAULTS

    • Any Active Fault will stop all DPF/SCR Function.

  • SCR EFFICIENCY - INSPECTION

    • Check the logged SCR Efficiency Values in the ECU via PTT. Generally a value over 90% Efficiency indicates a proper functioning SCR System (for many Volvo SCR Systems a stationary SCR Performance Test cannot be run, as alternative).

  • ECU SOFTWARE UPDATE

    • Check for any ECU Software Updates for all truck ECUs, run updates as available.

  • DPF PARKED REGEN

    • Perform a DPF Parked REGEN and/or SCR Performance Test and ensure passes, for Burner Systems ensure Flame Ignition occurs, for either system ensure the Exhaust Temperatures exceed 1,000F at DPF Outlet Temp Sensor.

Replace the following:

  • DPF AFTERTREATMENT FUEL INJECTOR (AFI) (if cannot be cleaned)

  • DPF FUEL NOZZLE (if cannot be cleaned / for post-2013 models)

  • DEF FLUID FILTER

  • DPF/DOC GASKETS (3X)

  • DEF Fluid Tank BREATHER (if needed)
